Standing on a rocky outcrop, the fortified village of la Petite Pierre has retained all the charm of a typical Alsatian villageupon which a majestic castle has stood since the Xiith century. A picturesque village which unveils its treasures. The pretty pedestrian street of the castle with its pretty buildings leads to the Saint Louis chapel which was constructed on the orders of Louis XIV, today it is a museum of Alsatian seals. Behind the chapel, the museum of art and foklore, dedicated to the small Christmas cakes, the springerle, and their moulds is situated in the ancient 16th century powder house. Access to the museum is free.
Take time to discover Notre-Dame de l’Assomption of which the choir and the 15th century frescoes survive, the rest of the edifice dates from the 19th century. Going down towards the village, the Pagan Tower a suprising Renaissance building gracefully dominates the forest.
The fortified village of la Petite-Pierre is the starting point for numerous hiking circuits twixt mountain and forest, the countryside is superb and that get away from it all feeling is guranteed.
